A Powerful Path to Growth, Healing, and Emotional Connection

At Renew the Mind Counseling, I believe healing happens not only through conversation – but also through experience.  Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT) is an experiential approach to counseling that incorporates structured interactions with horses to support emotional growth, self-awareness, and personal transformation.

This innovative therapy model blends traditional counseling principles with guided activities involving horses, offering clients a unique and deeply impactful way to work through life’s challenges.

What is Equine-Assisted Therapy?

Equine-Assisted Therapy is a collaborative process between a licensed therapist, an equine specialist, the client, and a horse.  Unlike horseback riding lessons, the focus is not on riding or horsemanship skills.  Instead, sessions involve groundwork activities such as grooming, leading, observing, and interacting with the horse in purposeful exercises.

Horses are highly sensitive, intuitive animals that naturally respond to human emotion and behavior.  Because they react honestly and without judgment, they provide immediate, authentic feedback.  This creates powerful opportunities for insight, growth, and change.

How the Process Works

Each session is tailored to the client’s individual goals.  The process typically includes:

        • Goal Setting: We begin by identifying personal goals such as improving communication, building confidence, reducing anxiety, or strengthening relationships.
        • Guided Information: Clients engage in structured activities with a horse under the guidance of the therapist.  These activities are designed to bring awareness to patterns in communication, boundaries, trust, and emotional regulation.
        • Reflection and Processing: After each activity, the therapist helps the client reflect on the experience – exploring what the horse’s responses may reveal about thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.
        • Integration: Insights gained during sessions are connected to real-life situations, helping clients apply new skills and perspectives outside the therapy setting.
