What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a psychotherapy approach developed to help people process and resolve distressing memories that may be “stuck” in the nervous system.  When difficult experiences are not fully processed, they can continue to affect thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.  EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they no longer feel overwhelming or intrusive.  Applications involve:

        • Trauma and PTSD
        • Anxiety and panic
        • Depression
        • Grief and loss
        • Phobias
        • Performance anxiety
        • Negative self-beliefs.

The EMDR Process

EMDR therapy follows a structured eight-phase approach including history and treatment planning, preparation with coping skills, assessment of target memories, reprocessing using bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements or tapping), and integration to strengthen positive beliefs and ensure stability.  Many clients report that memories feel less vivid, less emotionally intense, and less disruptive after EMDR sessions.
